About Mara Plains Camp
Mara Plains Camp is an intimate ultra-luxury
safari camp operated by Great Plains Conservation, set within the private
35,000-acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy on the northern border of Kenya's Maasai
Mara National Reserve. A proud Relais & Châteaux member and part of the
Réserve-Collection, this exclusive camp accommodates just 14 guests in 7 canvas
suites (plus the two-bedroom Jahazi Suite), raised on recycled railway sleeper
decking above the savannah. The conservancy boasts the lowest vehicle density
in the greater Maasai Mara region and the highest concentration of big cats
anywhere in Africa. With no set schedules or mealtimes, every day is tailored
entirely to guest preferences and wildlife opportunities — the definition of a
bespoke, intimate safari experience

Everything You Need to Know
What makes Mara Plains Camp different from other Maasai Mara lodges?
Mara Plains Camp is located in the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy, which has the lowest vehicle density and the highest concentration of big cats anywhere in Africa. With just 7 suites (max 14 guests), there are no set schedules — every activity is tailored around guest preferences and live wildlife opportunities. Guests also receive complimentary Canon DSLR cameras with lenses and premium binoculars for the duration of their stay.
Can families with children stay at Mara Plains Camp?
Yes. Children aged 8 and above are welcome. The two-bedroom Jahazi Suite is ideal for families, and it operates as a completely separate entity with its own private host, chef, guide, and game vehicle. A Young Explorers programme with activity packs is provided for children.
What are the night drives like at Mara Plains Camp?
Because the camp is located within a private conservancy (not the national reserve), night drives are permitted in custom open-sided 4×4 vehicles. This is a rare and exclusive experience in the Maasai Mara ecosystem, allowing guests to witness nocturnal wildlife such as leopards, hyenas, civets, and smaller mammals not visible during day drives.
Is Mara Plains Camp eco-friendly?
Yes. The camp is fully solar-powered and built using recycled railway sleeper decking. Great Plains Conservation supports the Olare Motorogi Conservancy through direct community fees, supports the Maasai Olympics, has planted over 2,000 indigenous trees, and funds female-owned local businesses. A Great Plains Foundation Conservation & Community levy of $95 per person per night directly supports these initiatives.
How is dining arranged at Mara Plains Camp?
There are no fixed mealtimes at Mara Plains Camp — dining is entirely flexible around your safari activities. Meals range from bush breakfasts under desert date trees to candlelit dinners under the stars. The lounge and dining tent is built on an elevated platform overlooking the savannah. All meals, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (except champagne and cellar wines) are included in the all-inclusive rate.
