Sasaab Lodge
Westgate Community Conservancy (Ngutuk-Ongiron Group Ranch), bordering Samburu National Reserve $1,200 – $2,800
About Sasaab Lodge
Sasaab is a spectacular luxury eco-lodge perched
dramatically above the banks of Kenya's Ewaso Nyiro River within the Westgate
Community Conservancy, just outside Samburu National Reserve. Owned and
operated by The Safari Collection, the lodge was developed in genuine
partnership with the local Samburu community and is designed with a unique
blend of Swahili and Moroccan architectural principles — a departure from the
typical safari lodge aesthetic. Each of the nine spacious tented suites spans
over 100 sqm with private plunge pools, open-air bathrooms, and sweeping views
of the Laikipia Plateau and the jagged peaks of Mount Kenya. Sasaab has been
awarded the prestigious Global Ecosphere Retreat certification — one of only 10
properties in the world to hold this honour — recognising its exceptional
commitment to sustainable, community-centred tourism.

Everything You Need to Know
What makes Samburu special compared to other Kenya safari destinations?
Samburu National Reserve is home to the famous 'Samburu Special Five' — five animal species found uniquely in this region and rarely seen elsewhere in Kenya: Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Gerenuk antelope, and Somali ostrich. The reserve also hosts large elephant herds, lions, leopards, and cheetahs. The hot, arid landscape and dramatic rock formations create a visually distinct and less-crowded alternative to the Maasai Mara.
What sustainability initiatives does Sasaab support?
Sasaab holds one of only 10 Global Ecosphere Retreat certifications worldwide. Through its Footprint Foundation, Sasaab provides free school lunches to over 1,000 children, runs a conservation scholars programme, campaigns against female genital mutilation and gender-based violence, and directly pays lease fees to the Westgate Community Conservancy. The lodge employs extensively from local Samburu communities and supports Samburu markets.
Can families with children stay at Sasaab?
Yes. Families are ideally accommodated in the Sasaab Family Suite (Rooms 8 and 9 combined), which share a central lounge and can be enjoyed as a private villa with separate en-suite rooms. The lodge team can arrange child-friendly activities, cultural interactions, camel rides, and age-appropriate safari experiences.
What is a 'Samburu village visit' at Sasaab like?
Sasaab has a genuine and long-standing relationship with the Samburu community on the Ngutuk-Ongiron Group Ranch. Village visits are arranged with village elders and are completely authentic — not staged for tourists. Guests may be invited to witness traditional ceremonies, visit local homes, and meet staff members' family members. The lodge also runs twice-weekly Samburu market visits, which are a highlight for many guests.
What activities are available beyond game drives at Sasaab?
Sasaab is renowned for the diversity of its activities. Beyond game drives into Samburu National Reserve, guests can enjoy camel rides with sundowners, walking safaris, fly camping under the stars, quad biking, helicopter excursions, yoga, spa treatments, cultural village visits, star gazing, and visits to community health and education projects supported by the Sasaab Footprint Foundation.
