About Wilderness Bisate Lodge
Wilderness Bisate Lodge is widely
regarded as the finest luxury lodge in Rwanda and one of the most
architecturally striking safari properties in Africa. Perched dramatically on
the edge of an eroded volcanic crater at an elevation of 6,070 feet (1,850m),
within walking distance of Volcanoes National Park, Bisate offers an unrivalled
combination of mountain gorilla encounters, visionary conservation, and
exceptional design. The six forest villas — built to evoke giant birds' nests
inspired by the circular architecture of ancient Rwandan royal palaces
(ihumure) — are extraordinary: each 91m² (1,000 sq ft) suite is crafted from
forest vines, bamboo, and thatch by local Rwandan artisans and features
breathtaking views of Mounts Bisoke, Karisimbi, and Mikeno. Interiors are warm
and layered with fireplaces, king-sized beds draped in hand-woven kitenge
linens, heated floors, woven-rattan egg-shaped bathrooms with twin rain
showers, freestanding bathtubs, private decks, and in-suite mini gyms ('gym in
a basket'). The communal spaces include a wine cellar, library, and The
Sanctuary spa. Since opening in 2017, Bisate has won 34 international awards
and has become synonymous with sustainable luxury travel. Its pioneering
reforestation programme — planting over 70,000 indigenous trees on 42 hectares
— and community-first ethos set the global benchmark for responsible tourism.
Rates are fully inclusive, the staff-to-guest ratio reflects a six-villa
property, and gorilla trekking permits (at $1,500 pp) are typically arranged by
the lodge. The exclusive Bisate Kwanda day lounge — Rwanda's first of its kind
— accommodates earlier arrivals and later departures in comfort.
