About Shira Camp (Shira 1 & Shira 2)
Shira Camp is situated on one of the highest plateaus on earth—a volcanic caldera that collapsed half a million years ago. The landscape transitions into the heath and moorland zone, featuring rocky ground and hardy shrubs. Shira 2 is a "bridge camp" where the air becomes noticeably thinner, and trekkers often experience their first real test of altitude. The site offers spectacular views of Kibo Peak to the east and Mount Meru to the west.

Everything You Need to Know
Can you reach Shira Camp by vehicle?
Shira 2 is the last point accessible by emergency 4x4 vehicles and has a helicopter pad. However, trekkers typically arrive on foot to ensure proper acclimatization.
How cold does it get at Shira Camp?
Because it is an open plateau, wind chill is a factor. Nighttime temperatures regularly drop below freezing ($0^\circ C$ to $-5^\circ C$).
What is "Shira Cathedral"?
It is a massive rock spire near Shira 1. Many groups hike here for an acclimatization "side trip" to reach a higher altitude before sleeping at camp.
Is there water at the camp?
Your porters will carry water from nearby mountain streams; there are no taps or running water facilities for public use.
