About Barranco Camp
Known for its unique landscape, Barranco Camp is surrounded by thousands of "Giant Groundsels" (Senecio kilimanjari) and Lobelias, giving it a prehistoric feel. The camp sits in a valley, meaning it stays in the shadow of the mountain longer than others, making for chilly mornings. The view looking up at the Barranco Wall—the following day's first challenge—is both intimidating and awe-inspiring.

Everything You Need to Know
Why is Barranco Camp considered good for acclimatization?
Trekkers usually hike up to Lava Tower (4,630m) before descending to Barranco (3,976m) to sleep. This "climb high, sleep low" method is essential for altitude safety.
Is the Barranco Wall dangerous?
While it looks vertical from camp, it is a non-technical scramble. No ropes are required, but you will use your hands for balance in some sections.
How cold is Barranco Camp?
It is significantly colder than Machame. Night temperatures are almost always below freezing ($0^\circ C$ or $32^\circ F$).
What are the strange plants around the camp?
Those are Giant Groundsels (Senecios). They are endemic to Kilimanjaro and can grow up to 5 meters tall, living for several hundred years.
