About Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp is often called the "Cold Camp" due to its exposed position on a ridgeline. It offers a stark, lunar-like landscape compared to the lush valleys below. The camp provides a breathtaking 180-degree view of the southern glaciers (Heim, Kersten, and Decken) and the vast plains of Tanzania below. This is the last camp with a reliable (though distant) water source before reaching the dry Barafu Camp.

Everything You Need to Know
Is it mandatory to stay at Karanga Camp?
No. Some 6-day routes skip Karanga and go straight from Barranco to Barafu. However, staying here significantly increases your summit success rate by allowing your body more time to adjust to the altitude.
Where does the water come from at Karanga?
This is the last water point on the mountain. Porters must descend into the Karanga Valley, collect water from the stream, and carry it back up to the camp.
How is the hike from Barranco to Karanga?
It begins with the Barranco Wall (a 1.5-hour scramble), followed by a series of "up and down" valleys. It is a shorter hiking day, usually 3 to 4 hours.
Can I see the summit from here?
Yes, the southern glaciers and the summit cone are clearly visible and look remarkably close from this vantage point.
