Kibo Hut is a stark, functional stone building designed to withstand extreme high-altitude conditions. The surrounding landscape is a high-altitude desert with virtually no vegetation, characterized by rocks and volcanic dust. The atmosphere here is quiet and focused, as most trekkers arrive in the early afternoon to eat and sleep before being woken at midnight for the final 1,195m push to Uhuru Peak.

How cold is it inside Kibo Hut?
Very cold. While the stone walls block the wind, there is no heating. Temperatures inside often stay near freezing ($0^\circ C$), and a -15°C or -20°C rated sleeping bag is highly recommended.
Can I get water at Kibo Hut?
There are no natural water sources or taps. Your porters must carry every liter of water for cooking and drinking from the Last Water Point near Horombo Hut.
Is it hard to sleep at Kibo Hut?
Yes, due to the high altitude (4,700m), many trekkers experience difficulty sleeping or mild headaches. It is important to stay hydrated and rest as much as possible before the midnight wake-up call.
What is the "Saddle"?
The Saddle is the 5km wide, flat, desert-like plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo that you must cross to reach the hut. It is very exposed to wind and sun.
