About Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Mawenzi Tarn Camp is famous for its namesake "Tarn" (a small mountain lake), which is one of the few permanent bodies of water high on the mountain. The landscape is dramatic and stark, dominated by the crumbling volcanic cliffs of Mawenzi. It is an essential acclimatization point; many trekkers spend an extra day here to adjust to the altitude before crossing the "Saddle" toward the final base camp. The site feels incredibly remote and offers some of the most striking "alpine" photography opportunities on the continent.

Everything You Need to Know
Can I swim in the Tarn (lake)?
No. Swimming is strictly prohibited to protect the mountain's fragile ecosystem, and the water is near freezing regardless.
Why is Mawenzi Tarn important for acclimatization?
At over 4,300m, it is a high-altitude camp. Spending an extra day here allows your body to produce more red blood cells before moving to the 4,700m Kibo Hut, significantly increasing your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
Is it windy at Mawenzi Tarn?
Yes. Because it is located in a natural bowl below jagged peaks, wind can funnel through the camp. Crews take extra care to secure tents with heavy rocks.
Can I climb Mawenzi Peak from here?
Only with a specialized technical climbing permit. Mawenzi is much more dangerous than Kibo due to loose, "rotten" rock and requires professional climbing gear and experience. Most trekkers simply enjoy the view.
