About School Hut Camp
School Hut was once a simple stone building used for storage and emergency shelter, but it now serves as a quieter, less-crowded alternative to Kibo Hut for summit preparation. The terrain is stark, rocky, and void of vegetation. Because it is slightly higher than Kibo Hut, it offers a minor head start on the summit climb. It provides an incredible panoramic view of the Mawenzi spires across the Saddle and is known for being one of the coldest and most tranquil high-altitude camps.

Everything You Need to Know
Why is it called School Hut?
Historically, the site featured a small hut that was used to teach climbers and porters about high-altitude safety and technical skills before the park was modernised.
Is it better than Kibo Hut?
Many prefer it because it is significantly less crowded and quieter, allowing for better rest before the midnight wake-up call. However, it is slightly more exposed to the wind.
How long is the hike to the summit from here?
The trek to the crater rim (Gilman’s Point) takes approximately 5–6 hours from School Hut, followed by another 1.5–2 hours to Uhuru Peak.
