About Wilderness Kulala Desert Lodge
Wilderness Kulala Desert Lodge is an iconic desert eco-camp designed to showcase Sossusvlei’s massive red sand dunes. The lodge features a main area constructed of canvas, thatch, and timber that includes a lounge, bar, dining area, and pool deck overlooking a highly active desert waterhole. Its primary feature is an exclusive-use private gate into the Namib-Naukluft National Park, allowing its guests to bypass the main public gate queues and access the dunes earlier than off-property visitors.

Everything You Need to Know
What is the benefit of the lodge’s private entrance gate?
The public park gate at Sesriem opens strictly at sunrise, creating massive vehicle queues. The Kulala Wilderness Reserve's private gate crosses directly over the Tsauchab River border into the national park, saving time and positioning lodge vehicles closer to the dunes for the morning light.
Can you actually sleep outside on the roof of your room?
Yes. Every chalet features a flat, structurally reinforced rooftop platform. The lodge team can set up a full bedroll complete with sheets, a duvet, and a mosquito net so you can spend the night outdoors under the Namib Dark Sky Reserve.
Do you need a 4x4 vehicle to drive to Kulala Desert Lodge?
While a 4x4 is not strictly required to reach the lodge itself via the public C19 highway, a high-clearance 2WD vehicle is a bare minimum for the gravel roads. If you plan to drive into Sossusvlei independently without using the lodge's guided trucks, a 4x4 is absolutely mandatory to clear the final 5km deep-sand stretch.
Is the property fenced?
No, the reserve is wide open to allow the natural migration of desert wildlife. It is common to see gemsbok (oryx), springbok, ostriches, and black-backed jackals wandering freely past the chalets and waterhole.
