Canoeing in Lake Manyara National Park
Endala Picnic Site, Lake Manyara National Park. 2 Hours
Experience Overview
The adventure typically begins at the Endala picnic site within the park. After a safety briefing, you’ll board stable two-person fiberglass canoes led by a qualified guide. The route follows the lake's shallow edges, where you can observe wildlife coming to drink without the noise of a vehicle engine. You’ll likely paddle through marshes and saline flats, spotting giraffes, buffalo, and a vast array of birdlife, including pelicans and kingfishers. The experience highlights the geological curiosities of the Rift Valley, including the hot springs on the western shore.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is canoeing available year-round?
No, it is highly dependent on water levels. During very dry years, the lake may recede too far for safe launching. It is most consistent during and after the rainy seasons (November to May).
Will I get wet?
you may get a little splashed while paddling or have wet feet during the launch, but the canoes are very stable and unlikely to capsize.
Can I see tree-climbing lions from the canoe?
While the lions are often in the trees near the groundwater forest, you are more likely to see them during the game drive to the launch site rather than from the water itself.
Is it safe to be in a canoe near hippos?
Yes, your guide is expertly trained to maintain a safe and respectful distance from hippos. They understand the water territory and will ensure the group stays clear of hippo paths.
