Frequently Asked Questions

Are there crocodiles or hippos in Lake Duluti?
No. Unlike the Momella Lakes in Arusha National Park, Lake Duluti does not have hippos or crocodiles, making it a very safe environment for small-craft canoeing.
Can I canoe by myself or do I need a guide?
While some operators allow experienced paddlers to go out solo, most tours include a guide who assists with navigation and points out the specific bird species and reptiles hidden in the reeds.
Is it better to go in the morning or afternoon?
Morning (around 9:30 AM) is best for calm waters and spotting active kingfishers. Late afternoon (around 4:00 PM) is spectacular for watching hundreds of egrets return to the central island to roost for the night.
Is the water safe to swim in?
Swimming is generally not encouraged due to the extreme depth of the lake and the importance of preserving the water quality of the nature reserve.
