Experience Overview
Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park places
visitors inside one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests for an
electrifying encounter with our closest living relatives. Nyungwe is home to
one of East Africa's largest chimpanzee populations, with habituated
communities that allow close observation. Accompanied by experienced trackers
and guides, visitors follow the chimps through the forest, listening for their
distinctive hoots and cries before locating the group. Once found, the one-hour
supervised visit reveals the chimps' rich social lives — grooming, foraging,
playing, and occasionally engaging in dramatic displays of dominance. The
forest itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate and shelters 13 primate
species, 300+ bird species, and 1,000+ plant species. The trek often begins
before sunrise to catch the chimps leaving their sleeping trees. This is a
dynamic, unpredictable, and deeply moving wildlife experience for nature lovers
and serious wildlife enthusiasts.
