Chimpanzee Tracking

Nyungwe Forest National Park, Rusizi District 4-7 Hours

Experience Overview

Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park places visitors inside one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests for an electrifying encounter with our closest living relatives. Nyungwe is home to one of East Africa's largest chimpanzee populations, with habituated communities that allow close observation. Accompanied by experienced trackers and guides, visitors follow the chimps through the forest, listening for their distinctive hoots and cries before locating the group. Once found, the one-hour supervised visit reveals the chimps' rich social lives — grooming, foraging, playing, and occasionally engaging in dramatic displays of dominance. The forest itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate and shelters 13 primate species, 300+ bird species, and 1,000+ plant species. The trek often begins before sunrise to catch the chimps leaving their sleeping trees. This is a dynamic, unpredictable, and deeply moving wildlife experience for nature lovers and serious wildlife enthusiasts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the success rate for seeing chimpanzees?
Nyungwe has habituated chimpanzee communities, so sighting rates are generally very high — typically above 90%. However, chimp location can vary, and sightings are never 100% guaranteed in the wild.
How does chimpanzee tracking differ from gorilla trekking?
Chimpanzees are much faster and more unpredictable than gorillas. The trek can involve rapid movement through challenging terrain. The experience is more dynamic and energetic, while gorilla encounters tend to be calmer and more intimate.
Where do I get my chimpanzee trekking permit?
Permits can be purchased through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) or through licensed tour operators in Rwanda. Advance booking is strongly recommended, especially in peak season.
Are there guided forest walks available without chimp tracking?
Yes, Nyungwe offers several forest walking trails that do not require primate permits, including the Waterfall Trail and various birding walks, which are great for general nature lovers
Is Nyungwe Forest accessible from Kigali?
Yes, Nyungwe is approximately a 5–6 hour drive from Kigali. Many visitors combine the trip with a stop at Lake Kivu. Domestic charter flights and organized tours with transport are also available.
