From Hermanus or Cape Town: Apex Shark Cage Diving & Marine Big Five Eco-Tour

5 Hours

Experience Overview

Come face-to-face with the ocean’s apex predators in the world capital of shark conservation. Operating out of Kleinbaai—a rugged fishing harbor near Gansbaai—the Apex Shark Cage Diving Experience takes you directly into the waters of "Shark Alley," a deep-water channel running between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock that acts as a natural hunting ground for diverse shark species.
Your journey begins with a scenic overland transfer from either Cape Town or the coastal cliffs of Hermanus. Arriving at the shore base, you'll receive a safety brief and an overview of the regional marine ecosystem from an onboard marine biologist. Boarding a custom-engineered, twin-engine dive catamaran, you will navigate the rolling swells out to the anchoring grounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a certified scuba diver to go into the cage?
No. The cage stays firmly attached to the side of the boat and floats with its top top-rail roughly 30 centimeters above the surface. No breathing apparatus or tanks are used—instead, you simply stand inside the cage with your head above water and drop below the surface for a few seconds when the guide signals that a shark is swimming past.
What happens if we don't see any sharks during the trip?
Sharks are wild, migratory animals, meaning sightings can never be 100% guaranteed. In the rare event that no sharks are encountered during your marine excursion, most premium operators offer a "No-Shark Guarantee," providing you with a free voucher for a repeat tour on an alternative date. Cash refunds are generally not provided.
Is shark cage diving ethical, and do you use live bait?
Yes, the tours are heavily regulated by the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE). Operators do not use live bait or feed the sharks, as feeding them would alter their natural hunting behaviors. Instead, a scent trail made of natural fish oils and mashed fish heads (chum) is used to draw them to the boat, ensuring a non-harmful, educational eco-encounter.
