Unlike standard trekking where you visit "habituated" groups that are already comfortable with humans, the habituation experience involves joining researchers, trackers, and rangers as they follow a "semi-habituated" group. your presence helps the gorillas get used to seeing people. you will observe the researchers' techniques, such as making specific vocalizations and maintaining non-threatening body language. because these gorillas are still learning to trust humans, they may be more mobile or shy, providing a raw and authentic look at their natural behaviors in the wild.

why is it more expensive than a standard trek?
the higher cost reflects the exclusive nature of the experience (only 4 guests vs. 8) and the significantly longer time spent with the gorillas (4 hours vs. 1 hour).
will the gorillas get close to us?
because they are still being habituated, they may keep more distance than fully habituated groups. researchers will manage the distance to ensure the gorillas don't feel crowded or threatened.
where should i stay for this activity?
you must stay in the rushaga or nkuringo sectors of southern bwindi. if you stay in the northern sectors (buhoma), the drive to the start point is too long to make the morning briefing.
what happens if we don't find the gorillas?
while trackers are extremely skilled and failure to find them is rare, if the group is not located, the uwa policy typically allows for a partial refund or a rescheduled trek, depending on the circumstances.
