Hot Air Balloon Safari Masai Mara

Masai Mara National Reserve 4-5 Hours

Experience Overview

A hot air balloon safari is widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary and romantic wildlife experiences available anywhere in Africa — a seamless fusion of gentle adventure, aerial wonder, and intimate wildlife observation that transforms the Kenyan savannah into a living tapestry of colour, movement, and light. Flights depart before first light, typically around 05:30–06:00, when passengers gather at the launch site and watch the enormous balloon inflate in the pre-dawn darkness. As the sun breaks the horizon, the balloon lifts silently and majestically over the plains, drifting with the wind at heights ranging from tree-canopy level to several hundred metres. Expert pilots — licensed to Civil Aviation Authority of Kenya standards — control altitude with extraordinary precision, descending close to elephant herds, hippo pools, giraffe, and lion while passengers watch in hushed awe from the suspended basket. The perspective from above transforms familiar landscapes into something revelatory: the sinuous bends of the Mara River, the geometric patterns of wildebeest herds moving across the plains, and the golden light of an African sunrise painting the savannah in extraordinary colour. After approximately 60–90 minutes aloft, the balloon descends to a pre-arranged landing site where a fully equipped bush breakfast awaits — crisp white linen, sterling silver, champagne, and freshly prepared food served in the middle of the open savannah — an experience of theatrical luxury that has few equivalents anywhere in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a hot air balloon safari safe in Kenya?
Yes. Kenya's commercial balloon safari operators are regulated by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, and pilots must hold current commercial balloon licences with regular medical fitness assessments. All reputable operators conduct daily pre-flight safety briefings and equipment checks. Weather conditions are carefully assessed before each flight, and trips are cancelled if conditions are deemed unsafe. Balloon safaris have an excellent safety record in Kenya.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my balloon flight?
If weather conditions — high winds, poor visibility, or thunderstorms — make flying unsafe, the flight will be cancelled and rescheduled or refunded in full. Weather in the Mara is generally most stable in the early morning, but the short rainy season (November) and long rains (April–May) can cause more frequent cancellations. Most operators have a no-fly policy in winds exceeding 12 knots
What is the bush breakfast after the balloon flight like?
The champagne bush breakfast is one of Kenya's most celebrated dining experiences — a full cooked breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausages, fresh fruit, pastries, coffee, tea, and champagne or sparkling wine, served on crisp white-linen tables laid out in the open savannah at the balloon's landing point. The setting is theatrical and deeply memorable, frequently cited by guests as a highlight of their entire Kenya trip.
Can I bring a camera on the balloon?
Yes, cameras are not only permitted but enthusiastically encouraged. A wide-angle lens (24–70mm) captures the sweeping aerial landscape beautifully, while a medium zoom (70–200mm) allows closer wildlife shots from above. All cameras and lenses must be secured with straps — loose items in the basket are not permitted. Many operators provide a post-flight game drive alongside the balloon crew vehicle, offering additional ground-level photography opportunities.
How early do I need to wake up for a balloon safari?
Typically guests are collected from their lodge at around 05:00–05:30 for a 30–45 minute transfer to the launch site. Inflation begins in darkness and launch occurs at first light — approximately 06:00–06:30. The early start is integral to the experience, as the golden sunrise light over the savannah is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena in Africa. Most guests describe the early wake-up call as entirely worthwhile.
