Kikuletwa (Chemka) Hot Springs (Maji Moto)

Rundugai, Kilimanjaro Region. 4 to 7 hours.

Experience Overview

The experience centers on a collection of deep, spring-fed pools surrounded by massive, twisting fig and palm trees. The water maintains a refreshing 27°C (80°F) year-round and is so transparent that you can see all the way to the 10-meter-deep bottom. Visitors can float in the calm currents, use the iconic rope swings to jump into the water, or enjoy a natural "fish spa" as tiny fish nibble at your feet. The area includes shaded picnic spots and local stalls serving grilled meats (Mishkaki), Chips Mayai, and cold beverages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the water actually hot?
Despite the name "Hot Springs," the water is actually lukewarm—roughly 27°C (80°F). It is perfectly refreshing rather than steaming.
Can I get there by public transport?
There is no direct public transport. You can take a dala-dala to Boma la Ng'ombe and then hire a taxi or boda-boda (motorcycle) for the final unpaved 15km stretch, but a private vehicle or tour is much more comfortable.
Are there changing rooms?
Yes, there are basic, rustic changing stalls and pit latrine toilets available on-site, though they are very simple.
Should I bring my own food?
Many people bring a picnic lunch, but local vendors also sell delicious freshly prepared Tanzanian BBQ and snacks if you prefer to support the local community.
