Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Volcanoes National Park 4-8 Hours

Experience Overview

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda's most iconic wildlife experience and a once-in-a-lifetime encounter. Led by expert guides and park rangers, participants hike through dense bamboo forests and volcanic terrain in the Virunga Mountains to locate one of the habituated gorilla families. Upon finding the group, visitors are granted a magical one-hour window to observe the gorillas up close in their natural habitat — watching silverbacks, mothers, and playful juveniles interact. The trek can range from 30 minutes to 6+ hours depending on where the gorillas are located that day. The experience is tightly regulated by the Rwanda Development Board to ensure the gorillas' safety and sustainability of the ecosystem. Trekkers are briefed at the park headquarters before departure, and a certificate of participation is awarded at the end. Revenue from permits directly funds conservation and community development, making this one of the world's most impactful eco-tourism activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?
You should be able to walk 2–6 hours on steep, sometimes muddy forest trails at altitudes above 2,400m. No special athletic ability is needed, but a reasonable level of fitness is important. Porter assistance is available.
How many people can see gorillas at once?
Only 8 visitors are allowed per gorilla family group per day. This strict limit protects the gorillas from disease and stress
What is the best time of year for gorilla trekking?
Gorilla trekking is available year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier trekking conditions. A 30% discount is often available in the low season (November–May).
Can the trek be cancelled due to weather or gorilla location?
Treks are very rarely cancelled but can be affected by heavy rains. The gorillas are tracked daily by scouts, and guides always know the approximate location before departure.
Is the gorilla permit refundable?
Permits are generally non-refundable and non-transferable once issued. It is strongly advised to purchase travel insurance that covers permit costs in case of illness or emergency.
