Experience Overview
Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park is
Rwanda's most iconic wildlife experience and a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
Led by expert guides and park rangers, participants hike through dense bamboo
forests and volcanic terrain in the Virunga Mountains to locate one of the
habituated gorilla families. Upon finding the group, visitors are granted a
magical one-hour window to observe the gorillas up close in their natural
habitat — watching silverbacks, mothers, and playful juveniles interact. The
trek can range from 30 minutes to 6+ hours depending on where the gorillas are
located that day. The experience is tightly regulated by the Rwanda Development
Board to ensure the gorillas' safety and sustainability of the ecosystem.
Trekkers are briefed at the park headquarters before departure, and a
certificate of participation is awarded at the end. Revenue from permits
directly funds conservation and community development, making this one of the
world's most impactful eco-tourism activities.
