Experience Overview
Immerse yourself in one of the most playful, unfiltered wildlife encounters on the planet. Operating out of the pristine coastal haven of Plettenberg Bay, the Guided Cape Fur Seal Snorkeling Adventure brings you face-to-face with a thriving colony of approximately 8,000 Cape fur seals along the rugged cliffs of the Robberg Nature Reserve. Often called the "puppies of the ocean," these curious marine mammals are just as fascinated by humans as we are by them.
Your journey starts at the beachfront base camp, where you'll be kitted out in a thick 5mm neoprene wetsuit to insulate against the crisp Atlantic temperatures. After a short safety overview covering ocean entry protocols and animal interaction ethics, you’ll head down to Central Beach for an exciting surf launch aboard a twin-engine Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB). Feel the adrenaline as the skipper navigates the breaking surf, transitioning into a smooth coastal cruise alongside the dramatic sandstone headlands of the Robberg Peninsula.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to swim with Cape fur seals? Are there sharks?
Yes, it is highly safe. Cape fur seals are naturally inquisitive and non-aggressive toward humans in the water, treating snorkelers as clumsy playmates. Regarding sharks: while the wider ocean area of the Western Cape is home to apex predators, the tour takes place in shallow, protected kelp forests and rocky shelves close to the cliffs where great white sharks cannot easily hunt or maneuver. Tours are continuously monitored by an onboard skipper on high-alert watch.
How cold is the water in Plettenberg Bay?
Water temperatures along the Garden Route fluctuate based on wind direction and ocean currents, typically ranging between 14°C and 20°C (57°F to 68°F). To keep you warm and entirely comfortable for the duration of your swim, the operator provides thick, high-quality 5mm marine-grade wetsuits that seal in body heat effectively.
What happens if I get motion sick on boats?
The boat launch involves pushing through coastal surf breaks, which can feel bumpy, and the boat will rock slightly while sitting stationary near the seal colony. If you are highly prone to motion sickness or sea sickness, we strongly suggest taking a standard over-the-counter anti-nausea medication roughly one hour before your scheduled meeting time.
Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear or camera?
All specialized snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel, fins, and wetsuit) is fully provided in your ticket cost. While cameras are not included, guides typically bring a waterproof action camera into the water to document the entire swim. These professional-quality photos and video packages are usually available for digital purchase immediately after the tour back at the base shop.
