Rhino Sanctuary & Wild Dog Center (Mkomazi)
Mkomazi National Park (Zange Gate), Same, Tanzania. 2 to 4 hours.
Experience Overview
The experience is split into two specialized conservation hubs. At the Mbogo Rhino Sanctuary, you enter a heavily protected, fenced area where you transfer to a park vehicle to track rhinos alongside armed rangers. You will learn about individual rhino histories and the 24/7 anti-poaching surveillance in place. The Wild Dog Breeding Center (George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust) allows you to observe these "painted wolves" in large breeding enclosures, where you can learn about their complex pack social structures and the veterinary protocols used to prepare them for reintroduction into the wild.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a rhino sighting guaranteed?
While the rhinos are in a fenced sanctuary, they are in a massive natural habitat. Sightings are very likely (over 90%), but not strictly guaranteed as the animals may be deep in the thickets.
Can I take photos of the rangers?
Because of the sensitive nature of anti-poaching work, always ask for permission before photographing rangers or security infrastructure within the sanctuary.
Do I need a separate permit?
Yes. In addition to your park entry fee, the Rhino Sanctuary requires a specific "Rhino Viewing Fee" ($35.40 for adults at the time of writing). This is usually paid at the park gate.
How do I get to Mkomazi?
Most visitors drive from Moshi (2 hours) or Arusha (3.5 hours) to the town of Same, then enter via the Zange Gate. It is a perfect stopover on the way to the coast or the Usambara Mountains.
