Experience Overview

Located in Nakasongola, the sanctuary serves as a halfway point between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park. Upon arrival, you are assigned a ranger who provides a safety briefing before heading into the bush. You will drive to a starting point near the rhinos' current location and then proceed on foot through the savannah and thickets. The rangers are highly knowledgeable about the individual rhinos (who all have names) and their social behaviors. You will typically be allowed to observe them at a safe distance of about 6 to 10 meters, watching them graze, sleep, or interact with their young.

Is it safe to walk near rhinos?

Yes, white rhinos are generally calm and non-aggressive if not provoked. You will always be accompanied by armed rangers who monitor the rhinos' moods and ensure you maintain a safe distance.

When is the best time to go?

Early morning (between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM) or late afternoon (after 4:00 PM) are best. Rhinos are most active during these cooler hours; during the midday heat, they tend to sleep in thick shade where they are harder to see.

Can I see other animals at Ziwa?

Yes. The sanctuary is home to over 300 bird species (including the rare Shoebill Stork) and various mammals like bushbuck, oribi, hippos, and crocodiles.

Do I need a 4x4 to visit?

The sanctuary is accessible via a well-maintained road from the main highway. However, within the sanctuary, a vehicle with decent ground clearance is helpful for reaching the tracking start points, especially in the wet season.
