Experience Camdeboo National Park

Formally proclaimed in 2005 as South Africa's 22nd national park, Camdeboo encompasses roughly 19,400 hectares of the unique Karoo biome. The park's diverse terrain transitions from flat, shrub-dominated plains and the Nqweba Dam up into the steep slopes of the Sneeuberg Mountain range, with altitudes reaching nearly 1,480 meters above sea level. Rather than a dense big-game safari destination, Camdeboo is celebrated for its geological wonders, birding wealth, and stark natural beauty. The park features scenic 4x4 trails, lakeside camping, and a designated game-viewing sector that allows visitors to witness herds of Karoo plains game moving against the backdrop of imposing mountain peaks.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

Can you see the Valley of Desolation in a regular passenger car?
Yes. The access road (Valley Road) leading up the mountain pass to the main Valley of Desolation parking lot and viewpoints is fully tarred, meaning a standard 2WD sedan can safely make the drive.
Where can you stay within the national park?
SANParks operates the Nqweba Campsite (featuring caravan and tent sites with electricity) and the rustic Lakeview Tented Camp, both situated on the banks of the Nqweba Dam. Extensive hotel and guesthouse options are also available in Graaff-Reinet, which sits right next to the park.
Do you need a permit to visit the viewpoints?
You do not need a separate permit, but you must enter through an official SANParks gate and pay the standard daily conservation fee (or present your Wild Card) to access the Valley of Desolation and the game-viewing sectors.
