Experience Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo East National Park is one
of the largest national parks in the world, covering over 13,700 square
kilometres of semi-arid landscape in southeastern Kenya. Together with the
adjacent Tsavo West, it forms the Tsavo Conservation Area — Africa's largest
protected area ecosystem — a vast wilderness that is home to some of the
largest elephant populations in Kenya, alongside an extraordinary diversity of
wildlife adapted to its semi-arid environment. Tsavo East's landscape is
characterised by open plains of red volcanic soil interspersed with commiphora
and acacia bush, rocky outcrops, and the life-giving Galana River — the park's
ecological backbone — which attracts wildlife from across the surrounding
savannah. The park's elephants are famous for their distinctive reddish
colouring, acquired by regularly dusting themselves in the vivid red laterite
soil, creating a unique and striking visual signature that sets Tsavo's
elephants apart from those in any other African park. The Yatta Plateau — the
world's longest lava flow at over 290 kilometres — runs parallel to the Galana
River and is one of the most extraordinary geological features on the African
continent. Lugard Falls, where the Galana River cascades through a narrow lava
gorge, is among Kenya's most dramatic natural spectacles. Tsavo East's vast
scale and relative emptiness give it a primal, frontier quality unlike more
accessible and crowded parks.
