Experience Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East National Park is one of the largest national parks in the world, covering over 13,700 square kilometres of semi-arid landscape in southeastern Kenya. Together with the adjacent Tsavo West, it forms the Tsavo Conservation Area — Africa's largest protected area ecosystem — a vast wilderness that is home to some of the largest elephant populations in Kenya, alongside an extraordinary diversity of wildlife adapted to its semi-arid environment. Tsavo East's landscape is characterised by open plains of red volcanic soil interspersed with commiphora and acacia bush, rocky outcrops, and the life-giving Galana River — the park's ecological backbone — which attracts wildlife from across the surrounding savannah. The park's elephants are famous for their distinctive reddish colouring, acquired by regularly dusting themselves in the vivid red laterite soil, creating a unique and striking visual signature that sets Tsavo's elephants apart from those in any other African park. The Yatta Plateau — the world's longest lava flow at over 290 kilometres — runs parallel to the Galana River and is one of the most extraordinary geological features on the African continent. Lugard Falls, where the Galana River cascades through a narrow lava gorge, is among Kenya's most dramatic natural spectacles. Tsavo East's vast scale and relative emptiness give it a primal, frontier quality unlike more accessible and crowded parks.

Travel Requirements

Tsavo East National Park charges KWS entry fees of approximately USD 52 per person per day for non-resident adults, payable via eCitizen. A valid passport and Kenya eTA are required. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended. Malaria prophylaxis is essential for this low-altitude semi-arid environment. Multiple airstrips serve the park — Buchuma, Voi, and Galana — with light aircraft transfers from Wilson Airport in Nairobi (approximately 1 hour) or Mombasa's Moi Airport (approximately 30 minutes). Road access from Nairobi takes approximately 4–5 hours via Nairobi–Mombasa highway (A109). The park is well served by a range of lodges from luxury tented camps to more affordable lodge options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Tsavo's elephants red?
Tsavo's elephants appear reddish-orange because they regularly dust themselves with the area's characteristic red laterite (iron-rich) volcanic soil. This dusting behaviour is thought to help with skin care, temperature regulation, and insect deterrence. The red colouring is unique to Tsavo and has become one of the park's most iconic and recognisable features
What is the Yatta Plateau?
The Yatta Plateau is the world's longest lava flow, stretching over 290 kilometres parallel to the Galana River within Tsavo East. Formed millions of years ago when lava erupted and flowed along an ancient river valley, it has since been left standing as a raised plateau as the surrounding softer rock eroded away. It is a remarkable and unique geological feature.
How big is Tsavo East compared to other parks?
At over 13,700 square kilometres, Tsavo East is one of the world's largest national parks — roughly twice the size of the Masai Mara National Reserve and significantly larger than many European countries. Combined with Tsavo West, the Tsavo Conservation Area exceeds 21,000 square kilometres, making it Africa's largest protected ecosystem.
What is Lugard Falls?
Lugard Falls is one of Kenya's most dramatic natural features — a series of cascades and rapids where the Galana River forces through a narrow lava gorge in spectacular fashion. The force of the water has sculpted smooth, curving chutes and pools in the lava rock. The falls are named after Frederick Lugard, a colonial administrator who visited in the late 19th century.
Is Tsavo East or Tsavo West better?
The two parks offer complementary rather than competing experiences. Tsavo East features more open plains, the Galana River, Lugard Falls, and Yatta Plateau — better for open-country game viewing. Tsavo West offers more varied and dramatic topography, the famous Mzima Springs, and the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. Most visitors combine both for a complete Tsavo experience.
