Experience Gombe Stream National Park

Established as a national park in 1968 and covering just 52 square kilometers, Gombe is a fragile habitat characterized by steep valleys, lush rainforests, and alpine bamboo. It is located on the wild western border of Tanzania. The park is unique because it is not accessible by road; visitors must arrive by boat across the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, the world's longest freshwater lake. While the chimpanzees are the primary draw, Gombe’s ecosystem is a rich mosaic of biodiversity, featuring several species of monkeys, diverse birdlife, and stunning waterfalls tucked away in the deep forest canopy.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the trekking in Gombe?
It can be strenuous. The terrain is steep and forested with no formal paths. A reasonable level of fitness is required, as you may spend several hours hiking to find the chimps.
    Are sightings of chimpanzees guaranteed?
While not 100% guaranteed, the success rate is very high (usually over 90%) because rangers track the communities daily from the moment they wake up.
Can I take a day trip to Gombe?
It is possible from Kigoma, but highly discouraged. Because the trek can take many hours, most visitors stay at least 2 nights to ensure they have enough time for a successful encounter.
Is it safe to swim in Lake Tanganyika at Gombe?
Generally, yes. The water is clear and bilharzia-free in this area, though you should always consult with your guide about current conditions and potential crocodile or hippo presence.
Do I need a guide to walk in the park?
Yes, all forest walks and chimpanzee treks must be accompanied by an official TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks) ranger or guide.
