Experience Hell's Gate National Park

Hell's Gate National Park is unlike any other park in Kenya — a compact, dramatic 68-square-kilometre park in the Great Rift Valley near Lake Naivasha where visitors can walk and cycle freely among wildlife without the confines of a vehicle. Named for a narrow break in the cliffs that once served as the outlet for an ancient lake, the park's landscape is dominated by towering red-tinged cliffs, deep volcanic gorges, geothermal steam vents, hot springs, and dramatic rock formations. The iconic Fischer's Tower — a 25-metre free-standing volcanic column — and the spectacular Ol Njorowa Gorge, a narrow 200-metre-deep canyon accessible on foot, are among Kenya's most extraordinary natural features. The park inspired the landscape of Disney's animated film 'The Lion King', giving it a cultural resonance beyond its ecological significance. The geothermal energy generated within the park powers the Olkaria Geothermal Station, one of Africa's largest renewable energy facilities. Hell's Gate is also home to the luxurious African-inspired architecture of the Ol Bolossat Springs and is famous as a rock climbing destination with routes on its basalt cliffs.

Travel Requirements

Hell's Gate National Park entry fees are charged by KWS via the eCitizen platform — approximately USD 26 per person per day for non-resident adults, making it one of Kenya's more affordable parks. Bicycles can be hired from operators at the main gate. A valid passport or national ID is required. International visitors need a Kenya eTA before arrival. Malaria risk is relatively low at Naivasha's altitude but prophylaxis is still advisable. The park is located approximately 90 km from Nairobi — about 90 minutes by road via Naivasha town. No four-wheel drive is necessary. Entry opens at 06:00 daily. Guided gorge walks require a small additional fee payable to KWS.
