Experience Lake Bunyonyi

Located between Kisoro and Kabale, near the border with Rwanda, Lake Bunyonyi is a body of water formed about 10,000 years ago when a river was dammed by a lava flow. It sits at an altitude of 1,962 meters, surrounded by steep, terraced hillsides that create a breathtaking "Swiss Alps of Africa" aesthetic. The lake is roughly 25 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide, with depths reaching up to 900 meters, making it the second deepest lake in Africa. Unlike many other African lakes, Bunyonyi is free from bilharzia, hippos, and crocodiles, making it a peaceful retreat for travelers returning from strenuous gorilla trekking in nearby Bwindi or Mgahinga.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

Is it really safe to swim in Lake Bunyonyi?
Yes. It is one of the very few lakes in East Africa confirmed to be free of bilharzia parasites, and there are no hippos or crocodiles. However, because it is extremely deep, only confident swimmers should go far from the shore.
What is the history of Punishment Island?
Historically, the Bakiga people would abandon unmarried pregnant girls on this tiny island as a form of punishment and a deterrent to others. Today, only a few dead trees remain on the island, and it is a popular stop for cultural boat tours.
How do I get to Lake Bunyonyi from Bwindi?
It is approximately a 2- to 3-hour drive from the southern sectors of Bwindi (Rushaga/Nkuringo) and about 3-4 hours from the northern sector (Buhoma).
Are there ATMs at the lake?
No. You should withdraw Ugandan Shillings in Kabale town before heading to the lake, as most lodges and boat operators prefer cash (though larger resorts accept credit cards).
Can I see mountain gorillas at Lake Bunyonyi?
No, there are no gorillas at the lake. However, it is the perfect place to relax for a few days either before or after your gorilla trekking in nearby Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
