Experience Meru National Park

Meru National Park is one of Kenya's most scenically beautiful and ecologically rich wildlife areas, yet remains remarkably uncrowded and little-known compared to the Masai Mara — making it arguably the country's finest 'secret' safari destination. Covering 870 square kilometres in central Kenya northeast of Mount Kenya, Meru encompasses an extraordinary diversity of habitats — dense riverine forest, open savannah, swamps, doum palm woodland, and the crystal-clear rivers of the Tana, Rojewero, and Murera systems — that support an exceptional concentration of wildlife. The park was immortalised by Joy Adamson's beloved book and film 'Born Free', which documented the remarkable story of Elsa the lioness being raised and returned to the wild here. The Adamsons' legacy permeates the park, with Elsa's grave lying within the park boundaries. Meru was devastated by severe poaching in the 1980s and 1990s but has undergone a remarkable conservation renaissance, with elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, and cheetah all returning in significant numbers. Today Meru represents one of Africa's great conservation success stories and offers visitors an extraordinarily authentic, uncrowded bush experience. Elsa's Kopje luxury lodge, perched on dramatic rocky outcrops with panoramic views, is one of Kenya's most celebrated safari properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the connection between Meru and 'Born Free'?
Meru National Park was the setting for Joy and George Adamson's famous conservation work with Elsa the lioness, documented in Joy's book and subsequent film 'Born Free'. Elsa was raised from a cub by the Adamsons and successfully returned to the wild in Meru. Elsa's grave lies within the park, and the Adamsons' story remains central to Meru's identity
Why is Meru considered Kenya's best-kept safari secret?
Despite its extraordinary wildlife, scenic beauty, and historical significance, Meru receives a fraction of the visitor numbers of the Masai Mara or Amboseli. This means game drives feel genuinely exclusive, wildlife encounters are unshared, and the park retains an atmosphere of authentic, unspoilt wilderness that is increasingly rare in East Africa.
Can I see rhino in Meru National Park?
Yes. Both black and white rhino are protected within the Murera Rhino Sanctuary within the park, an intensive protection zone with dedicated rangers. Rhino tracking on foot with experienced guides is available and represents one of the park's most thrilling activities.
What is Elsa's Kopje?
Elsa's Kopje is one of Kenya's most celebrated luxury safari lodges, built on and around the dramatic rocky outcrops ('kopjes') where George Adamson once camped. It offers spectacular panoramic views across the park, intimate accommodation, and outstanding guiding, consistently ranking among Africa's finest safari properties.
How do I get to Meru National Park?
Light aircraft from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Murera or Kinna airstrips takes approximately 1 hour and is the most convenient access. Road access via Meru town takes approximately 5–6 hours in a four-wheel drive and involves the A2 highway north from Nairobi through Nanyuki.
