Experience Erongo Mountains

Formed over 130 million years ago, the Erongo Mountains are a "volcano-plutonic" complex—essentially the skeletal remains of a volcano that collapsed into its own magma chamber. The slow-cooled igneous rock has resisted erosion for millennia, creating a beautifully bouldered landscape that stands up to 2,216 meters above sea level. Located between the towns of Omaruru and Karibib, this region is a transition zone between the desert and the savanna. It is home to the Erongo Mountain Nature Conservancy, where private landowners collaborate to protect the unique biodiversity and prehistoric heritage of the range, including sites like Paula’s Cave with its ancient engravings.

Travel Requirements

  • Access: Most visitors enter via the towns of Omaruru or Karibib.

  • Vehicle: A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the gravel access roads; a 4x4 is necessary for some of the more remote farm tracks and sandy river crossings.

  • Permits: Since much of the mountain range is on private land or within the Conservancy, you must often be a guest at a local lodge or pay a day-visitor fee to access specific sites like Philipp's Cave.

  • Visa (2026): Ensure you have 3 blank pages in your passport and a valid visa if your nationality is not exempt under the updated 2025/2026 regulations.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to see the rock art in the Erongo Mountains?
Most sites are on private conservancy land. Staying at a local wilderness lodge often includes guided walks to exclusive sites, though places like Ameib Ranch allow day visitors to hike to Philipp’s Cave.
Is the Erongo region a malaria risk?
It is generally considered a very low-risk area, but it is always advisable to use insect repellent, especially during the wetter summer months (January to March).
Can I drive through the mountains?
There is no single "pass" through the center of the massif; rather, there are various access roads that lead into different valleys and conservancy areas. You should plan your route based on the specific lodge or site you are visiting.
