Experience Sesriem
Named after the six (ses) leather thongs (riems) early settlers joined together to draw water from the nearby canyon, Sesriem is more than just a park entrance. It is a rugged outpost where the orange sands of the Namib meet the vast gravel plains of southern Namibia. The settlement centers around the park gate, providing access to a 60km corridor carved by the Tsauchab River. While most visitors use it as a launching point for sunrise dune climbs, the area itself boasts unique geological formations and desert-adapted life that make it a destination in its own right.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Sesriem from the dunes of Sossusvlei?
The main dunes of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are located approximately 60km from the Sesriem gate. The road is paved for the first 55km, followed by 5km of deep sand.
Can I visit Sesriem Canyon year-round?
Yes, the canyon is open throughout the year. It is usually dry, though rare seasonal rains can cause the Tsauchab River to flow, occasionally making parts of the canyon floor inaccessible.
Is there accommodation inside the park?
Yes, staying at the NWR Sesriem Campsite or Sossus Dune Lodge allows you to enter the park an hour earlier than outside guests, which is a major advantage for sunrise photography.
