Experience Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya's most celebrated and photographed wildlife destinations, located in the south of the country near the Tanzanian border. The park's defining feature is its extraordinary backdrop — the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 5,895 metres, looming above the open plains to create one of the most dramatic wildlife settings on earth. Covering approximately 392 square kilometres, Amboseli encompasses open plains, shallow seasonal lakes, marshes fed by underground waters from Kilimanjaro, acacia woodland, and the permanent swamps of Enkongo Narok and Ol Tukai, which attract dense concentrations of wildlife year-round. The park is Africa's premier destination for elephant watching — large, relaxed herds are virtually guaranteed on every game drive, with bulls frequently displaying against the mountain backdrop in scenes of legendary photographic beauty. Amboseli is also home to some of the longest-running elephant research programmes in the world, led for decades by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, providing remarkable insights into elephant behaviour and social structure

Travel Requirements

Amboseli National Park charges KWS entry fees payable via the eCitizen platform — approximately USD 90 per person per day for non-resident adults. All international visitors require a valid passport and an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) obtained online before departure. A yellow fever certificate may be required if travelling from or through yellow fever endemic countries. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended as Amboseli has a risk throughout the year, particularly around the swamp areas. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is highly advisable. Dress codes are informal — lightweight neutral-coloured clothing is ideal. The park is accessible by road from Nairobi (approximately 4 hours via Emali or 5 hours via Namanga) or by scheduled light aircraft to Amboseli airstrip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Amboseli famous for elephants?
Amboseli hosts one of Africa's most studied and habituated elephant populations. The elephants are remarkably relaxed around vehicles, allowing exceptionally close and prolonged observation. The permanent swamps ensure large herds congregate year-round, and the Kilimanjaro backdrop makes for unrivalled photographic opportunities.
Is Mount Kilimanjaro always visible from Amboseli?
The mountain is most clearly visible in the early morning and on clear days during the dry season. Cloud cover — especially during the rainy months of April–May and November — can obscure the summit, so early morning game drives offer the best chance of clear views.
How far is Amboseli from Nairobi?
Amboseli is approximately 240 kilometres from Nairobi, taking around 4–5 hours by road depending on your route. Scheduled light aircraft flights connect Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Amboseli airstrip in approximately 45 minutes.
What is the best time of year to visit Amboseli?
The dry seasons from June to October and from January to February offer the finest game viewing, when wildlife concentrates around the swamps and vegetation is low. January and February are excellent for Kilimanjaro views and clear skies.
Are there cultural experiences near Amboseli?
Yes. Maasai communities live around the park boundary and several lodges offer authentic Maasai village visits, cultural performances, and guided walks with Maasai warriors, providing enriching insight into traditional pastoralist culture.
