Experience Chinhoyi Caves

Chinhoyi Caves National Park is one of Zimbabwe's most unusual natural attractions — a system of limestone and dolomite caves and sinkholes that open into the legendary "Sleeping Pool" (Chirorodziva in Shona). The centrepiece is a perfectly still, cobalt-blue flooded cave reaching 90 metres deep, where the water's extraordinary clarity and mineral composition gives it a surreal, glowing blue colour unlike almost any other cave water on earth.

The caves have deep cultural significance — the Shona people used them historically as a place of refuge and spiritual ceremony. The name "Chirorodziva" means "Pool of the Fallen" in Shona, referring to an attack by the Nguni people in the early 19th century in which villagers sheltering in the caves were killed.

For scuba divers, Chinhoyi is a bucket-list destination. The cave system is one of the finest fresh-water cave dives in Africa, and the warm (22–24°C), crystal-clear water extends into a series of chambers and passages accessible to experienced cave divers. For non-divers, the vivid blue pool and surrounding limestone formations are stunning to view from above. The park is an easy day trip from Harare and can be combined with visits to nearby farms, game areas, or the Umfurudzi Safari Area.
