Experience Eastern Highlands

The Eastern Highlands form a long escarpment along Zimbabwe's eastern border with Mozambique, rising to the country's highest point at Mount Nyangani (2,592 m). This is a Zimbabwe most visitors never discover — a dramatically different landscape of pine-clad mountains, trout-stocked rivers, tea estates, granite peaks, and rolling mist that feels more like the Scottish Highlands or New Zealand than the Africa of postcards.

The region is centred on three main areas: Nyanga in the north (the most accessible, with Mount Nyangani and Nyanga National Park), Bvumba in the centre (famous for the lush Bvumba Botanical Gardens and forest birding), and Chimanimani in the south (the most dramatic and remote, with wild hiking in the Chimanimani National Park).

The Eastern Highlands are a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking trails through montane forest and along granite ridges offer superb views into Mozambique. Trout fishing on cold-water streams and dams is a long-established tradition. The birding is exceptional — unique Afromontane species including the rare Roberts' warbler, orange ground thrush, and chirinda apalis are found here and virtually nowhere else in Zimbabwe. The cool climate (rarely above 25°C) makes it a favourite escape for Zimbabweans during the hot lowland summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best base for exploring the Eastern Highlands?
For Northern Highlands (Nyanga), the town of Nyanga or Troutbeck Resort is ideal. For Bvumba, stay in or near Mutare. For Chimanimani, there are guesthouses in the village and a basic national park camp at Outward Bound.
Is it safe to hike Chimanimani alone?
The trail to the Chimanimani mountains passes through a remote border area. While most hikes are completed safely, it is advisable to go with a local guide and inform park staff of your route and expected return.
How cold does it get in the Eastern Highlands?
Nights in July and August can drop close to 0°C at higher altitudes. Warm layers are essential even in summer. The daytime temperature is generally pleasant year-round.
