Experience Great Zimbabwe Ruins

Great Zimbabwe is among the most significant archaeological sites in Africa — a sprawling complex of dry-stone walls and enclosures built between the 11th and 15th centuries by the ancestors of the Shona people. At its height, the city is believed to have housed 18,000 people and served as the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, a powerful trading empire that exported gold, ivory, and copper to the Swahili Coast and beyond.

The site is divided into three main areas: the Hill Complex (the oldest section, believed to be a royal enclosure and spiritual centre), the Great Enclosure (the largest single ancient structure in sub-Saharan Africa, with walls reaching 11 metres high and 5 metres thick), and the Valley Ruins (a series of smaller enclosures that would have housed the city's population).

Great Zimbabwe gives its name to the country itself and remains a powerful symbol of African identity and achievement. The iconic soapstone Zimbabwe Bird carvings discovered here are reproduced on the national flag and coat of arms. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is managed by the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe. A small but informative on-site museum provides context for the ruins.
