Experience Kasane

Kasane occupies a remarkable geographical position at Botswana's far northeastern tip, where the borders of four nations meet at Kazungula on the Chobe and Zambezi rivers. This quadripoint border — one of only two in the world — makes Kasane a uniquely cosmopolitan frontier town and an important regional transit hub. The town has grown significantly in recent years, with improving infrastructure including the upgraded Kasane International Airport, new hotels, and expanded visitor services.

The Chobe River frontage is Kasane's defining feature and primary attraction. The riverfront road is lined with luxury lodges and hotels, all with direct water access and views across to Namibia's Caprivi Strip on the opposite bank. Sunset boat cruises from these lodges routinely encounter hippo pods, enormous crocodiles, and the extraordinary elephant concentrations for which Chobe is world-famous — all within metres of the boat.

Kasane serves as the eastern gateway to Chobe National Park, with the Sedudu Gate just a short drive from town. Game drives from Kasane along the Chobe Riverfront are some of the most productive in Africa, particularly from July to October when wildlife densities peak. The Sedudu Island dispute (resolved in 1999 by the International Court of Justice in favour of Botswana) added a footnote of international legal history to this already remarkable stretch of river.

Beyond Chobe, Kasane is well-positioned for day trips to Victoria Falls (about 80km away in Zimbabwe/Zambia), the Kazungula ferry crossing into Zambia, and excursions into Namibia's Caprivi Strip. This multi-country accessibility makes Kasane one of the most versatile bases in all of southern Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kasane known for?
Kasane is known primarily as the gateway to Chobe National Park and the Chobe Riverfront. It sits at the meeting point of four countries and provides easy access to Victoria Falls. Its riverfront is famous for sunset boat cruises where enormous herds of elephants come to drink and bathe, and where hippos, crocodiles, and a spectacular variety of birds can be observed at close range.
Can I visit Victoria Falls from Kasane?
Yes — Victoria Falls is approximately 80km from Kasane and accessible by road in about 90 minutes. Both the Zambia side (Livingstone) and the Zimbabwe side (Victoria Falls town) are reachable. Day tours from Kasane are widely available. The KAZA UniVisa (USD 50) allows entry to both Zimbabwe and Zambia, available on arrival at most border crossings.
Is it possible to self-drive the Chobe Riverfront from Kasane?
Yes. The Chobe Riverfront is one of the best self-drive game viewing areas in Botswana. The road from the Sedudu Gate follows the Chobe River for about 50km and offers extraordinary wildlife encounters. A standard 4WD or even a high-clearance 2WD can manage the Riverfront road during the dry season.
What are the best hotels and lodges in Kasane?
Top choices include Chobe Game Lodge (the only lodge inside the park, with both river and bush experiences), Chobe Marina Lodge (luxury riverfront in town), Elephant Valley Lodge (stylish and excellent value), and Chobe Safari Lodge (established mid-range riverside property). Budget travellers can find clean guesthouses and self-catering options in the town centre.
