Experience Sossusvlei

The name "Sossusvlei" roughly translates to "dead-end marsh," referring to the place where the dunes meet and prevent the Tsauchab River from flowing any further. Surrounded by a "sea of sand," the dunes here are among the oldest on Earth, with their vivid orange-red color resulting from high concentrations of iron oxide. While the vlei (pan) itself is a dry, white expanse most of the year, it occasionally fills with water during rare flood years, creating a stunning turquoise lake that reflects the surrounding dunes. It is the centerpiece of the Namib-Naukluft National Park and a bucket-list destination for photographers and nature lovers alike.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Sossusvlei and Deadvlei?
Sossusvlei is the main pan at the end of the river course, often featuring green vegetation. Deadvlei is a nearby pan famous for its white clay floor and iconic dead trees; it no longer receives water because it is cut off by dunes.
When is the best time of day to visit?
Sunrise is the most popular time, as the low light creates a sharp contrast between the orange sand and deep shadows. Sunset is also spectacular but requires you to be mindful of the gate closing times.
Can I fly a drone in Sossusvlei?
No, the use of drones is strictly prohibited within all Namibia National Parks to protect the wildlife and the experience of other visitors.
