Experience Windhoek

Windhoek lies at an elevation of approximately 1,650 meters, surrounded by the rolling Eros, Auas, and Khomas Highland mountains. Its name, likely derived from the Afrikaans "Wind-hoek" (Windy Corner), reflects its position in a breezy basin. Before European settlement, the area was known as |Ai-||Gams ("Hot Water") by the Nama people, referring to the thermal springs that once bubbled here. Today, Windhoek is a clean, manageable city where German colonial architecture—like the iconic Christuskirche—sits alongside modern high-rises and bustling open-air markets. It is the essential starting point for almost every Namibian safari, providing the perfect place to stock up on supplies, rent 4x4 vehicles, and enjoy world-class dining before heading into the wild.

Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival with 3 blank pages.

Visa: Many nationalities (US, UK, most EU) are visa-exempt for up to 90 days. For those who do need one, Visas on Arrival are available at Hosea Kutako International Airport.

Health: Windhoek is Malaria-free due to its high altitude. However, if you are heading north to Etosha or the Zambezi Region afterward, prophylaxis is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the international airport from the city?
Hosea Kutako International (WDH) is about 45km (45 minutes) east of the city center. Most travelers arrange a shuttle or rent a car at the airport, as there is no public transport between the airport and town.
Is it safe to walk around Windhoek?
Generally, yes, especially in the central business district during the day. Like any capital city, it is wise to avoid walking alone at night and to keep valuables out of sight to prevent opportunistic crime.
Do I need a 4x4 if I’m just staying in Windhoek?
No. The roads within the city and the main highways connecting to other towns are excellent and fully paved. You only need a 4x4 if your itinerary includes the remote gravel roads of the desert or northwest.
