Experience Mkomazi National Park

Established in 2006, Mkomazi covers approximately 3,234 square kilometers in northeastern Tanzania. Its name is derived from the Pare word for "scoop of water," reflecting its dry environment where water is a precious resource. The park is a vital sanctuary for several species that are rare elsewhere in Tanzania, most notably the Black Rhino and the African Wild Dog, both of which are part of intensive reintroduction and breeding programs within the park. Mkomazi’s unique location between the mountains and the dry plains creates a spectacular scenic contrast, and because it remains off the main tourist track, it offers a peaceful, "private" safari experience far from the crowds of the northern parks.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see rhinos in Mkomazi?
Yes, but they are kept in a highly secured, fenced sanctuary within the park. Access to the sanctuary is strictly controlled and often requires prior arrangement or a specific entry fee.
Is Mkomazi part of the "Northern Circuit"?
It is geographically in the north but is often skipped by standard tours. This makes it an ideal choice for travelers looking for a quiet, off-the-beaten-path experience.
What should I pack for Mkomazi?
Because it is a semi-arid region, pack lightweight, sun-protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and plenty of water. Evenings can be cool, so a light jacket is necessary.
    Are there elephants in Mkomazi?
Yes, there is a healthy population of elephants that migrate between Mkomazi and Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park.
How far is the park from Moshi or Arusha?
It is about 2 to 3 hours from Moshi and roughly 4 to 5 hours from Arusha, making it a feasible overnight trip or a long day trip.
