Experience Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Established in 2005 as a collaborative effort between the Rhino Fund Uganda and the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Ziwa serves as a secure "nursery" for a species that was poached to local extinction by 1983. The sanctuary is a private, non-profit project situated on the Gulu Highway, roughly halfway between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park. It features a mix of savanna, woodlands, and swamps (Lugogo Swamp) that provide an ideal habitat for its growing population of over 30 white rhinos. Because the rhinos are protected by 24-hour armed guards and are habituated to human presence, Ziwa offers one of the few opportunities in the world to track these prehistoric giants safely on foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to walk near rhinos?
Yes. The rhinos at Ziwa are habituated to people and are generally calm. You are always accompanied by highly trained rangers who monitor the rhinos' behavior and ensure you maintain a safe distance.
How long does the rhino tracking take?
Depending on the location of the rhinos, the activity usually takes between 1.5 to 2.5 hours. You will drive to a starting point and then walk into the bush.
Can I see rhinos in any other park in Uganda?
No. Currently, Ziwa is the only place in Uganda where rhinos live in a wild (fenced) environment. Plans are underway to reintroduce them to Murchison Falls and Kidepo in the future.
Can I visit Ziwa as a day trip?
Yes, it is approximately a 3-hour drive from Kampala, making it a viable day trip. However, most people visit as a stopover while traveling to Murchison Falls National Park.
What should I wear for rhino tracking?
Long trousers and closed-toe shoes (like hiking boots or sturdy sneakers) are essential for walking through tall grass and thorny scrub. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat.
