Trip Overview
The 6-Day Roaring Kenya Mid-Range
Safari is the ultimate comprehensive Kenya wildlife experience — a perfectly
sequenced three-park circuit that delivers the very best of East Africa's
wildlife kingdom at exceptional mid-range value. This safari has been
meticulously crafted to showcase three completely distinct ecosystems, each
offering its own unique wildlife drama.
Your journey begins in the iconic
Masai Mara National Reserve — the northern tip of the vast Serengeti-Mara
ecosystem, and the undisputed king of Kenya's wildlife destinations. The Mara
is world-famous for its extraordinarily high density of predators. Black-maned
lions are encountered almost daily, cheetahs — so habituated to vehicles that
they sometimes climb onto safari roofs for better vantage points — are
frequently spotted hunting, and leopards ghost through the acacia woodland.
With an extraordinary 500 bird species recorded, the Mara is also a birder's
paradise. Two full days of game drives explore every corner of this magnificent
reserve.
From the Mara, you travel north to
Lake Nakuru National Park — one of the natural wonders of the world. Recognised
internationally for its extraordinary alkaline lake ecosystem, Lake Nakuru is
home to Africa's finest rhino sanctuary, harboring over 40 black rhinos and 60
white rhinos. The park's flamingoes — which can number up to 2 million birds at
peak times — create a breathtaking deep-pink living shoreline that ranks among
Africa's most extraordinary wildlife spectacles.
The final chapter takes you south
to Amboseli National Park — Africa's elephant kingdom. Set against the dramatic
backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, Amboseli's ancient lake
bed landscape supports some of the largest and most iconic elephant herds on
the continent. Here, the sight of great tuskers crossing the volcanic dust
plains with Kilimanjaro rising above them creates images of timeless African
grandeur. The safari concludes with a final morning game drive before returning
to Nairobi.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Depart Nairobi early morning in your custom 4x4 safari vehicle, heading southwest toward the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve — the northern apex of the vast Serengeti ecosystem and one of the few remaining places on Earth where wildlife lives comparatively undisturbed in the numbers that once roamed all of Africa. The Masai Mara is the beating heart of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, hosting the spectacular seasonal migration of many thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and the predators that pursue them. As your vehicle descends from the Rift Valley escarpment and the golden plains of the Mara open before you, the sheer scale of this wilderness creates an immediate sense of awe. Arrive in time for a hot lunch at Zebra Plains Mara Camp before heading out for your first afternoon game drive. As the sun begins its descent, the savannah comes alive — lions emerge from the shade, elephants make their way to water, and the Mara's extraordinary birdlife fills the golden evening sky.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Masai Mara the world's best safari destination?
The Masai Mara supports one of the highest concentrations of large mammals on Earth. Its wide-open grasslands, high predator density (lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, wild dog), and extraordinary diversity of 500 bird species make it unparalleled. The annual Great Wildebeest Migration — when over 1.5 million animals thunder through the Mara between July and October — is widely considered the world's greatest wildlife spectacle. Yet even outside migration season, the Mara offers daily predator sightings that most parks can only promise seasonally.
What is the difference between black and white rhinos, and can I see both at Lake Nakuru?
Yes — Lake Nakuru is one of only a handful of places in Africa where you can see both species in a single visit. Black rhinos are smaller, hook-lipped (adapted for browsing leaves), solitary, and critically endangered with only around 6,000 remaining globally. White rhinos are larger, square-lipped (adapted for grazing), and more social. The distinction has nothing to do with colour — "white" is believed to derive from the Afrikaans "weit" meaning wide, referring to the mouth shape.
How many elephants will I see in Amboseli?
Amboseli is home to approximately 1,600 elephants living in around 60 family groups, all extensively studied by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project — the world's longest-running elephant study. Encounters with large herds of 50–100 or more elephants are common, particularly around the swamp areas in the early morning and late afternoon. The park is also one of Africa's last strongholds for "super-tuskers" — bulls whose tusks reach the ground.
What is the accommodation like on the mid-range safari?
This safari uses quality mid-range properties selected for comfort, location, and authentic safari atmosphere. Zebra Plains Mara Camp offers comfortable tented accommodation inside the Mara ecosystem with full board. Lake Nakuru Lodge provides a classic safari lodge experience with park views. Kibo Safari Camp in Amboseli delivers comfortable rooms with Kilimanjaro views. All properties have en-suite bathrooms, reliable Wi-Fi, and on-site restaurants.
Can I upgrade the accommodation on this safari?
Absolutely. We can arrange upgrades to premium properties such as Sarova Mara Game Camp, Governors' Camp, or Angama Mara in the Masai Mara; Sarova Lion Hill in Nakuru; and Ol Tukai Lodge or Tawi Lodge in Amboseli. Please contact us for customised quotes based on your preferred dates and group size.
Is this safari suitable for first-time safari-goers?
This is an ideal first safari. The three-park circuit exposes you to the full breadth of Kenya's wildlife in a structured, expert-guided format. No prior safari experience is needed. Your professional guide will explain animal behaviour, park ecosystems, and ensure you never miss a sighting. This itinerary is consistently rated among the best value introductions to Kenya safari travel.
