Essential Travel Information

Visa Requirements

Tourist Visa

The standard tourist visa allows visitors to enter Uganda for tourism, family visits, or medical purposes. It is typically valid for up to 90 days and may be issued as a single-entry or multiple-entry visa depending on the application.

East Africa Tourist Visa

Travelers visiting several East African countries may apply for the East Africa Tourist Visa, which allows travel between Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda with a single visa for up to 90 days.

Visa-Exempt Travelers

Some nationalities, mainly from African and Caribbean countries such as Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, can enter Uganda without a visa for short visits depending on bilateral agreements.

Required Documents for Visa Application

Travelers applying for a Ugandan visa must normally provide the following documents:

  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond the travel date

  • A recent passport-size photograph

  • Travel itinerary or tour plan

  • Hotel booking or accommodation details

  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate

  • A return or onward travel ticket

  • Payment of visa fees and submission through the official immigration portal

Processing of e-visas usually takes 2–3 working days, although travelers are advised to apply at least several days before departure.

Travel Advisory

Health and Vaccination Requirements

Visitors must present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate upon entry into Uganda. Malaria is present in many regions, so travelers are advised to take preventive medication, use mosquito repellent, and sleep under insect-treated nets where necessary.

Safety and Security

Tourists should exercise normal travel precautions, especially in crowded areas and urban centers. It is advisable to travel with licensed tour operators when visiting national parks or remote areas. Avoid traveling at night in unfamiliar regions and keep valuables secure.

Transportation and Travel Advice

The main international entry point is Entebbe International Airport, located near Lake Victoria. Visitors should arrange airport transfers in advance and use reliable transportation services such as licensed taxis or tour company vehicles.

Cultural and Local Etiquette

Uganda has diverse cultures and traditions. Visitors should dress modestly in rural communities and respect local customs and traditions. Photography of government buildings and military installations is usually restricted.

Insurance and Documentation

Travel insurance covering medical emergencies and adventure activities such as gorilla trekking or mountain climbing is highly recommended. Travelers should also carry copies of important documents such as passports and visas.
